Image cluster setup

Currently the cluster consists of 3 disk servers and 3 IBM blade servers for computation put into a subnet with a 1 Gbit switch. This subnet is hidden behind a firewall inside the diku internal network (i.e. behind the diku firewall). In the following you will find details about the machines in the cluster.

Update: since spring 2012, imagediskserver1-2 is not running. These machines are situated at the old basement at DIKU. The rest of the machines are at Panum, please contact Jens at Science-IT, +45 30508031.


File servers

We have 3 file servers which are Performance G8 SATA storage servers from ProConsult. These machines are called imagediskserver1-3.


Performance G8 SATA storage server:

CPU: Intel Xeon E5310, 1.60 GHz  Quad core
Memory: 2 GB Kingston DDR2-667 ram in modules of 2 x 1 GB.
     1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 320 GB, 16 MB, ATA100
     6 x Seagate Barracuda ES, 750 GB, 16 MB, SATA II
Network interface: 2 x 1000 Mbit ethernet adapters


Gentoo Linux amd64 profile which means that the operating system is 64 bit (Intel 64 architecture).

The switch is a Cisco/Linksys 10/100/1000 Mbit 16 ports Gigabit Switch, WebView (SRW2016). For more information see the product web site. You find the manual here.

Furthermore IP address is used by the firewall and is the broadcast IP address.

Installation notes

Things to do in the future:

  • Link bonding / aggregation
  • WMware server / player and Windows XP
  • April 2, 2008, sporring: On 113, the useflags have been updated in /etc/make.conf, so we need to emerge --newuse world on this machine. But since portage has updated its understanding of use flags, we need to do the following on all cluster machines:
    • emerge -C sys-apps/setarch
    • emerge -uDav --newuse world
